For this journal cover sew along, I wanted to make something to keep a record of all the goofy things Annabel and Colton say. "The cat kissed my toast," was one of Annabel's early sentences when she hadn't learned the word for 'lick' yet. When she was younger, she said 'a-ya!' at everything. At 19 months old, Colton definitely has a sense of humor, but he hasn't started saying funny sentences yet. "Broom broom!" is still his favorite expression.
The sew along is being hosted by Darling Adventures. There is a materials list and a wonderful video tutorial here. Photos can be uploaded to the flickr group until July 8th so there's still time to join in!
I bought two plain composition books, one for Annabel and one for Colton.
I created the text on my laptop. The font is Bradley Hand.
Layout was fun. I traced the composition books on plain pieces of paper and created the design. I used Pellon's new EZ Steam II double stick fusible web to adhere two cars and racing flags from Michael Miller's fabric, 'Fast'. The girl with the bunny rabbit is from 'Let's Pretend' by Sarah Jane Studios for Michael Miller. I've been using Pellon's Steam-A-Seam2 for years and EZ Steam II did not disappoint, except when I accidentally ironed a bare piece of it and wound up in a battle with goo gone and a hot iron... Try to avoid this mistake!
I embroidered the words by hand with three strands of black DMC embroidery floss. The letters are backstitched and the dots are French knots. Instead of tracing the words onto the fabric directly I used Sulky's Fabri-Solvy stabilizer which dissolves in water when you're done.
The inside front cover of the journal. You can hardly tell it's a plain composition book!
The ribbon to mark pages is a nice touch.
I haven't finished sewing Annabel's journal cover yet. Check back to see how it turns out! I'll keep them handy so I don't can jot down all the silliness that comes out of their mouths. I always think I'm going to remember but often don't.
I'm giving away a copy of Stitch Zakka. See yesterday's post for a mini book review, and be sure to comment to enter for the chance to win!
