To celebrate the first anniversary her book Quilty Fun: Lessons in Scrappy Patchwork (an It's Sew Emma publication) Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet designed this fun birthday cake quilt block. It's not paper pieced; it's all traditional piecing and goes together faster than you might think. For the free pattern, please visit Fat Quarter Shop here.
Don't you just love the bow? It's upside down. It fell off my design wall while I was working and I put it back up the wrong way! Fortunately, it doesn't bother me. The block is 12.5 x 14.5", however, I added a few inches at the top so I could appliqué a flame on the candle (I like my cakes on fire!) and also a few inches on each side so it's now square. I fused it to Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece and plan on making a birthday banner to hang. We celebrate a lot of birthdays this time of year; Annabel just turned five! It could also be made into a pillow or special birthday gift bag. Colton has already asked if we can hang it up for his third birthday at the end of next month. I should have it finished by then. :)
