Kate Spain fan that I am, I've been wanting to work with Horizon. Last weekend I made this 48.5 x 56.5" quilt using the latest free pattern from Fat Quarter Shop, called Fat Eighth Frenzy. I enjoy working with fat eighths — they're easy to iron, fit nicely on my cutting mat and don't give me much grief. I even used the 'stack and whack' technique to cut four pieces of fabric at a time. The last quilt I made from a fat eighth bundle was Ebb & Flow using Kate Spain's Sunnyside.
Before I knew it, I'd trimmed 30 fat eighths into a quilt on my design wall, and had a lovely pile of perfect triangles as scraps.
Fat Eighth Frenzy comes with a free bonus pattern to make a 34 x 41" quilt out of the scraps. Ever since I made this tumbler quilt, I've been obsessing over quilt backs. I decided to continue the interplay of light and dark on the back of this quilt and used 32 of the scraps to create a HST row of arrows. The rest of the backing is a tone on tone cream-colored fabric that was left over from my Tombstone Tumbler quilt that I made for Halloween.
I took it to my parents' house to sit and finish the binding. I think it fits in there, don't you?
I used Pellon Nature's Touch 100% cotton batting. It's a nice weight for this size quilt.
The binding is Squared Elements in Navy by Art Gallery Fabrics. I'd originally thought about an orange binding and maybe even hand tying some orange into the body of the quilt, but I liked the look of Squared Elements and went with it.
Yes, I think it will live with my parents. It looks so nice with these silk couch pillows. If they get tired of it they can always rotate it out and select another one!
Fat Eighth bundles are 20% off at Fat Quarter Shop until November 2nd. Don't forget to download Fat Eighth Frenzy, and check out the YouTube video.
A big thanks to my mom for braving the chilly wind yesterday and holding the quilt up for these photos.
