Need a quick gift for the people who have everything? A set of these custom placemats can be made in a few hours. They're reversible and require no hand sewing! I made eight for my parents; they have a narrow, glass topped dining room table so I scaled this set down a bit. This pattern makes 14 x 19" placemats.
Materials Needed:
Fabric for top, 1/2 yard per two placemats
Fabric for back, 1/2 yard per two placemats
Pellon® Fusible Fleece, 1/2 yard per two placemats
Prewash fabric, use 1/2” seam allowances throughout. For each placemat, cut a 14 3/4 x 19 3/4” rectangle out of each of the 2 fabrics. Cut one 14 x 19” piece of Fusible Fleece.
Lay the top piece of fabric down on an ironing board, wrong side up. Center the rectangle of Fusible Fleece on the fabric (adhesive side down) and fuse according to manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cool.
Right sides facing, align the top (with the fusible fleece facing up) on top of the bottom piece of fabric. Pin the pieces together. Backstitch and sew around the perimeter of the Fusible Fleece, leaving a 4” gap open for turning. Backstitch, remove from the machine and clip corners.
Turn right side out, fold the fabric under around the 4” gap and press all the edges. Topstitch around the entire placemat, 1/4” from the edge. The 4” opening will be sewn shut with the topstitch, and they're good to go!
